Guinea Pig Photos! )

This week has been a blur of rodent problems, however. Only yesterday, I think it was, I was inspecting Chipo's eye because it was kind of gunky and he was having a hard time keeping it open. I decided to see if Kage was having similar problems, and while his eyes were fine, I noticed a tiny little bug burrowing into the thin fur around his eyelids. ...Nice.
I couldn't seem to match the bug I'd seen to any standard pictures of guinea pig ticks/lice/fleas on Google, but we determined that they probably have lice anyway. After scouring the internet for advice, Andres decided to go buy some anti-parasite medication for dogs, in combination with a spray designed for rodents. Both of the guinea pigs were extremely displeased with the treatment, and I think it may be awhile before they forgive us for the trauma. Regardless, I think it's for the best. Apparently parasites, if left untreated, can do some pretty serious damage or even become lethal.

Aside that, not much else is new. I feel like I'm hanging on by a thread most of the time, dragging myself to class. My dad sent me a case of probiotics medicine to try, and I've been taking it, but haven't noticed an effect. I'm also trying to change my diet. Andres made an offhand comment about how we shouldn't eat out as much, and I took it to heart, even if he didn't. I made pinto beans from scratch (rather than from a can) for the first time a few days ago, and have been making a real effort to eat more fruit. This effort is greatly aided by the wonderful Sunflower Market, which sells fruits and veggies for relatively cheap, and randomly has crazy sales on awesome stuff, like blueberries. (Yesterday we got like 5 avocados for 50 cents apiece! Total epic win.)

I'm also kind of in a state of shock, horror, and denial about the mound of reading I have to do this weekend. I was assigned no more and no less than THREE books to read (three individual classes each assigned a book for Tuesday), and this is in addition to research for Portuguese and, as always, reading for my thesis. But it's okay. For the most part, I am interested in the assigned materials, and if I don't try to pretend that I have time and energy for anything else in my life, reading days away honestly suits me just fine.
