Bikes & Things

So today Hugh was a sweetheart and came all the way to Arlington to let Wen and I pick his brains on the mechanics of bicycles. I don't think I learnt much in the way of actual applicable skill towards being able to fix or modify my bike, but it was still really refreshing/helpful just to observe some of the bare basics of dismantling the major parts, to see the ways in which different bikes had varying components, and to learn a bit of just the vocabulary surrounding the myriad parts. So now I know what the fork and dropout are, and what the sort of wrench that Hugh was using looked like. I'm also TOTALLY paranoid about locking my bike now that I know how fucking elementary it is to remove a wheel. o-o
So yea, it wasn't much, but I really enjoyed it and am really grateful to Hugh for being willing to show me. With luck we'll be able to have a part 2 to the workshop before I leave.
After we'd basically done what we wanted with the bike, we all rode to the Arlington Diner for dinner, since Hugh had wanted to try it last time he was here but it had been closed. Dinner was pleasant enough, I guess, and afterwards Wen went home but Hugh and I rode out to the Danish Pastry House for coffee and dessert. It was nice, though cold because we were eating outside. And then the ride home was FREEZING because the clouds were finally emitting a mist that while not quite rainy was still frustratingly capable of leaving one feeling doubly wet and cold. Mer.
But anyway...today was awesome because normally when I wake up feeling groggy and the weather is meh, it almost invariably turns into a kind of low key, wasted day...and I actually feel like despite myself I did get something out of today. Which is a vaguely rare and welcome feeling in itself. Even though I think I caught a cold riding in the rain and might be miserable tomorrow. Oh well.
