Today classes began...and I was so hyper/upside down from the vacation that I couldn't sleep a bit the night before. It made the day feel half bland, half unnaturally interesting.

My Japanese teacher is cute and hyper, but she seems like the type who is passively strict...ie. the type that will inform you with a sympathetic smile on her face that she just can't let you can't make up the quiz you just missed because you fell down the stairs and sprained your ankle... But we'll see. SHe's also a brand new teacher, just imported from Brandeis, and seems to discuss her experience there (and imply how it was better) a rather excessive amount. Also, the romanization system used by the textbook is arbitrary and horrible to the degree that it really makes me almost wish I'd chosen Chinese to study, because it's seriously going to be bothering me all semester. I think I will judge the genuine quality of the teacher on whether or not she lets me use my own preferred Romanization (since it makes it less aggravating, and really more intuitive, in my opinion)

Math was interesting because the review was so thorough that I actually felt bored. We worked on linear equations. I figure I better savor the feeling of being on top of the material, though...since I doubt it's going to last...

It turns out that my human services course, which I had [foolishly] assumed would consist mostly of coordinating volunteer jobs, is actually probably the most demanding class I have this semester, including math. I'm sort of concerned about my ability to keep up with all the papers, but am at this point convinced that I will manage somehow. The professor is perky and the information seems fascinating...I just need to keep up.

Latin American film seems actually surprisingly promising. THe professor is like an old goofy guy who seems to have legitimately thought about the films he's showing and analyzed them, and actually comes up with pertinent points. He also seems to really enjoy the subject matter, and talks about various actors and films and directors and backhistory as though he were just chatting up about them to whomever would listen. Maybe most pop culture classes are like that, but I've never really taken one before, so it was a new concept to me. And it was refreshing. My problem is that the class comes at the end of an extremely grueling day, so hopefully I will be able to stay awake through many dimmed lights and long films.

After L.American film today, I met up with Hugh, and we went to anime club because Matty had said that he was visiting. We watched this cracked out anime and afterwards I spent the next 4 hours chilling with awesome anime club people in Qdoba and eventually we took a walk to Shaws. (It amazes me that we were able to do this. It has been so freakishly warm recently...when I stepped outside this morning, I got a huge omg-it's-spring vibe...and then my brain did a little sommersault when I realized it's still the beginning of January. I just wish it would last...)

I found a list in my pouch that I made over vacation of goals that I want..no, need to accomplish over the next few months. But...more on that later. I am so tired. And so grateful to have friends. They make the early darkness and chill wind infinitely more bearable.

I hope my classes go as well. I don't start back until the 28th because UMass has an unusually long winter break.

I'm jealous that you get to take Japanese! Please occasionally squee about its finer points that I'd probably otherwise be unaware of. Hee.
