I felt sheer, burning hatred today, for the first time in a long time.
It was directed towards this girl in my calc class, who came in like 15 or 20 minutes late, and sat next to me. And proceeded to cough all over me. But I don't mind that part; that was the part she probably couldn't control.
But then she whipped out her phone, fiddled with it, and put it on the table. I thought she had just turned it off, because she just got into class, right? Wrong. She was having a long, depthy text message conversation throughout the entire course of the class. At first I gave her the benefit of the doubt, that she might be responding to some emergency correspondance--but it became clear pretty quickly that that wasn't so. Nor was she being discreet--oh no, she was holding the phone clearly above her as she did it, and every 3 minutes or so the phone would vibrate on the desk because she turned on vibrating text notifications. Everyone could hear it, everyone could see her...including, most likely, the professor.
It was just the most blatantly rude thing I have ever seen in my life. Okay, so there are 168 hours in a week. Calc class only comprises 3.25 of those. Even fewer for her, because she arrived so damn late. You could HAVE the decency to just put up with the damn class for an hour and then text all you want when you're done. She may as well have not realized she was in a classroom at all; because she wasn't taking notes, and when we were given problems to figure out in class, she just kind of stared blankly at the board and didn't come up with anything. IF YOU AREN'T GOING TO DO ANYTHING IN CLASS BUT TEXT THEN DON'T SHOW UP. DO YOUR TEXTING IN THE HALL RATHER THAN DISTRACTING EVERYONE ELSE.
It's not that I'm totally against people multitasking in class or not paying attention or whatever. But there is some unwritten rule that she just totally overlooked; the silent law that begs you do it discreetly. If you have a computer, surf the web if you will, but minimize the browser when the teacher comes by. Nod off on your desk in a way that won't result in you slouching off the chair and drawing attention to yourself. Hell, even text--but do it *subtly*, carefully pressing buttons in the shadows beneath the desk, and DON'T, don't EVER put the phone on vibrate so that every few minutes when your friend responds it shakes the table and makes a huge noise that makes everyone jerk their head in your direction. It doesn't matter if you hate the prof, or if you hate the class. (Which...my calc teacher is awesome and I can't imagine anyone hating her, which is just making me more angry about it.) It doesn't matter if you'd really sooner be somewhere else. What that girl did is completely unacceptable, and she came off as entirely too haughty; too aloof to even notice that I certainly wasn't the only one sending her dirty looks. It was basically as though she were having a phone conversation right in the middle of class, not thinking it necessary to go outside or lower her voice or anything. Completely unacceptable.
As vindictive as it is, I really hope there is some karma for this. I hope she drops her phone and breaks it, so that she can experience what it's like to be without its use for more than two seconds. I hope that she has to study really hard and blow off the friend she was texting to complete the homework and get a good grade in the class. I hope that if she doesn't have the mental tenacity to study up on what she missed, that she has to take the course again. I hope that somehow, in some way, she learns.
GOD I am so fucking pissed.
